The Oregon Legislature has made education a top priority this session, with the passage of the Student Success Act, which funds preK-12 programs. But while school districts across the state are expecting a boost, our state universities and community colleges are facing steep budget shortfalls.
We must act now to support higher education in Oregon. Without additional investment, our postsecondary institutions are going to be forced to raise tuition, cut important programs and departments, and make tough choices on financial aid funding. With record revenues, Oregon lawmakers should be able to support students across the education continuum by making meaningful investments in community colleges and public universities. If they don’t, Oregon students – mostly rural, low-income or marginalized students – will be harmed.
Tell your legislators to make the needed investments Oregon students deserve. At a time when our communities and our economy are ever-changing, a postsecondary degree has never been more important to lifelong prosperity. We should be breaking down barriers to college, not reinforcing them. Act now.
