Last week, as Oregon leaders celebrated a 3-point uptick in statewide high school graduation rates for 2018, we had to wonder why this was considered such good news.
Even with graduation rates at 77 percent, better than 1 in 5 Oregon kids is not crossing that stage to pick up a diploma. Legislators need to know: That’s not good enough. Oregon has spent too long close to dead last in the nation on graduation rates, and the kids who don’t make it face a lifetime of stunted careers and earnings.
That is not ok.
